Frequently asked questions

What does an independent trustee offer?

More effective management of conflicts of interest, specialist expertise to support other trustees, experience of a wide range of schemes, continuity, best value from advisers and a focus on scheme governance.

What are Capital Cranfield’s charges?

For both a co-trustee appointment and for a chairmanship of trustees, our rates are very competitive. Some schemes prefer to work on a fixed annual fee which we are also happy to accommodate.

Is there an alternative to a conventional trustee board?

It is possible for schemes to be governed by an independent sole corporate trustee. We currently have some 50 such appointments and believe that such arrangements will become increasingly more common in the future.

How does Capital Cranfield avoid conflicts of interest?

We restrict our activities to independent pension fund trusteeship.  We are independently owned with no other business activities.

How extensive is Capital Cranfield’s experience of independent trusteeship?

Capital Cranfield's origins date back to 1992.  We are currently appointed to some 250 ongoing pension schemes and are responsible for winding-up a further 100 schemes.

How are Capital Cranfield’s client directors recruited?

Capital Cranfield's client directors must demonstrate experience, expertise and the ability to communicate effectively with others. In addition to trustee experience, each of our client directors has a particular expertise in, for instance, investment, actuarial, legal or pension benefits areas. Some of our client directors have a business background, with specialist accounting and/or management skills.

How do Capital Cranfield’s client directors keep abreast of developments in the pensions world?

The experience of all of our client directors is fully verified on recruitment and each is required to pass the PMI's Certificate in Trusteeship and to undertake substantial ongoing CPD, which we record.

How is governance addressed at Capital Cranfield?

All Capital Cranfield's client directors operate to a common governance platform, supervised by a governance committee. They are required to report progress against a range of key issues and concerns. The platform has been evidenced to tPR.

How can an independent trustee help to control a scheme's running costs?

As experienced professionals, client directors with Capital Cranfield are very cost aware. They can suggest when - and when not - to seek external advice and can help trustees to interpret and challenge that advice.
